Best known for: Falmouth road race. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Falmouth is located on the South Western tip of Cape Cod and is an easy drive to reach down route 28 from the Bourne bridge over the Cape Cod Canal 14 miles to the North. Falmouth was settled in 1660 and officially incorporated in 1686. Early forms of commerce took the form of farming, whaling, shipping, salt production and sheep. In later years cranberries and strawberries were introduced and with the advent of the railroad coming to town the economy experienced a surge and the result was an increase in the population. With World War 2 ramping up and the proximity to the Otis air national guard base a building boom ensued which carried on for decades after the war.
Falmouth is home to the world renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Marine Biology Laboratory and the Woods Hole Research Center. It is also home to the world famous 7 mile Falmouth road race and the Barnstable Fair grounds. Another fixture in the town of Falmouth is the Woods Hole, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority. The ferry line runs daily service to and from Marthas Vineyard for residents, tourists and cargo alike. The ferries to Nantucket actually dock in Hyannis since it is closer to that island.
Enjoy the warm gentle water of Nantucket sound at one of the many beaches or take a stroll or ride a bike along perhaps the most scenic bike trail on Cape Cod the Shining Sea Bikeway. Later enjoy downtown Falmouth a truly walking town that boasts many restaraunts, shops of all kinds and concerts in the park on weekends. Falmouth is a great town with a lot to offer tourist and resident alike.
