The village of Hyannis is named after Iyannough a sachem of the Cummaquid tribe and is the largest of seven villages that make up the town of Barnstable.  Hyannis is the central hub of the Cape and some consider it the capital city.  The town is a very active area for commerce and transportation. In town you will find the only enclosed Mall on the Cape called The Cape Cod Mall.  In fact there are many other large modern shopping centers and car dealerships found in Hyannis that cater to all your shopping needs.  Along with shopping there are also many franchised restaraunts to be found.  If the big box stores are not to your liking there are also many smaller places more characteristic of the Cape to shop and dine. Many of these shops can be found along Main street and in Hyannisport.  Transportation wise Hyannis is home to the Barnstable Municipal Airport with routine flights to Boston, New York, Provincetown and the islands.  The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority also calls Hyannis home and they operate the only public transit bus service on the Cape. At the West end of town you will also find the Cape Cod Central Railroad and the Massachusetts Coastal Railroad.  Hyannis also features the largest recreational and second largest commercial harbor on the Cape.  At the water front you will find the ferry link to Nantucket and secondary passenger service to Marthas Vineyard via The Steamship Authority.

For entertainment Hyannis is home to many museums including the John F Kennedy museum. The Kennedy family has a compound in Hyannisport where the family would congregate and sail in the summer breezes.  In the summer towards the East end of town listen for the beats of well known musicians and entertainers coming from the Cape Cod Melody tent.  Hyannis is well known for its night life.
