  • Best known for: The oldest town on the Cape

Sandwich was first settled in 1637 and incorporated in 1639. It is named after the seaport Sandwich Kent in England. Sandwich began like many early settlements on the Cape did with a stress on agriculture and fishing critical to their survival. Later came the Boston and Sandwich glass factory which helped to fuel the local economy. Today the main economy is tourists.

Sandwich is the oldest town on the Cape and it has several fine museums including, Heritage Museum and Gardens,  Sandwich Glass museum, Wing Fort house and both the oldest house on Cape Cod the Hoxie House and the oldest mill the Dexter Grist Mill.   Sandwich is also home to a large portion of the Otis Air National Guard Base.  Take a drive along historic Rt 6a and marvel at the antique charm of yesterday.

The northern tip of the town is divided by the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal. On the mainland side you will find the Scusset Beach State Reservation were campsites are available as well as parking for Scusset beach and the start of the scenic bike trail that follows the canal all the way to Bourne. On the other side of the canal is another bike trail, beach and marina situated next to the power plant.   Take some time to fish the canal for many trophy striped bass have been pulled from its deep fast moving water.  Watch the canal for unusual visitors from tall ships to dolphins and whales. You never know what you might see.
