Best known for: The Cape Playhouse
The land of Dennis was first settled in 1639 and was actually a part of Yarmouth at the time and it wasn't until 1793 that it became its own town. The name of Dennis came from the popular resident minister josiah Dennis. The town was labeled an All American Town in 1978, and it combines traditional New England heritage with modern day conveniences. The villages of East Dennis, Dennis and South Dennis feature scenic historic districts hailing back to whaling days, while tranquil tree-lined streets meander through Dennis Port and West Dennis.
Dennis is located 24 miles from the Sagamore bridge over the Cape cod canal. The town spans the Cape from Cape Cod bay to Nantucket sound. Dennis is home to the Cape Playhouse which is the oldest summer theatre in the United States. The popular resdient and tourist attraction of Bass river borders Dennis and is enjoyed by all. On the Bay side is Sesuit Harbor with it's large lot and public boat ramp and to the south is West Dennis harbor. The Cape Cod Rail Road officially stops in Dennis and that is where the Cape Cod Rail Trail starts along the former rail bed. The rail trail is a popular trail for bicycle riders and walkers. The trail winds its way from Dennis all the way to Wellfleet and at the bicycle "rotary" in Harwich it branches off and continues to Chatham. If you didn't bring your bike there are rentals available.
Sixteen inviting beaches lie on the warm waters of Nantucket Sound to the south and on the crisp refreshing waters of Cape Cod Bay to the north. Numerous recreation trails offer healthful relaxation, and well developed business districts throughout the villages provide ample goods and services. Residents of Dennis feel a sense of pride in their home by the sea.
