Best known for: The Wampanoag Tribe
Following King Philp's war, King Philip was an Indian Chief, the native american tribes of Wampanoag and the Saconnet were brought together on a reservation that would later become the town of Mashpee. The land was first settled by whites in 1658. For many years tension between the whites the indians and their English "landlords" ran high. Over the years the "rights" of the Indians was encroached apon to the point where they lost them and their land. Today the town of Mashpee is known for its native American culture and annual pow wow as well as a tourist destination.
