Provincetown is located amongst the dunes on the outer most tip of Cape Cod. A full 62 miles from the Sagamore bridge over the Cape Cod Canal. Almost 2/3rds of the town is actually inside the National Seashore. Provincetown was first settled in 1700 but 80 years before it served as the first landing spot for the Pilgrims in 1620. The Pilgrims then moved on to settle in Plymouth. To commemorate the Pilgrims landing and signing of the Mayflower compact the Pilgrim monument was constructed and is the tallest all granite block tower in the United States at 252 feet. Take a walk up the sloping steps to the top for a panoramic view of the area.
Provincetown or Ptown as it is often called is home to a diverse group of people from artists and performers, to fishermen, to gay and lesbian people. It is truly a free spirited resort community. Provincetown started off as a fishing and whaling village and was once home to an extensive Portugeuse fishing fleet. In the 1890's P town was booming and was quickly becoming a tourist destination and literary center. The great gale of 1898 damaged the fishing fleet and as a result the artistic community stepped in to occupy the abandoned buildings and ever since then the town has become known as a place for artistic endeavors. In the 1920's beatniks moved in. As early as the 1940's drag queens were performing and in the 1960's Ptown was home to many hippies. Today the Ptown zip code has more same sex couple households than anywhere else in the United States.
Throughout the year Provincetown offers many festivals and events that caters to everyones enjoyment. Come to Provincetown, enjoy the beaches, stroll the downtown, grab a bite to eat at one of the many fine resteraunts then enjoy an ice cream and sit and watch the world go by in one of Ptowns more leisurley pursuits, people watching.
